Markets News, September 4, 2024: S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite Close Lower as Nvidia Continues Sliding (2024)

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished lower for the second straight day Wednesday, as AI investor favorite Nvidia (NVDA) continued losing ground while other large-cap tech stocks also slid.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropped 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%. The major indexes were coming off their worst day since Aug. 5 yesterday, as September has started off much the same way as the previous month amid concerns about the health of the U.S. economy and a downturn in tech stocks.

Nvidia shares, which fell nearly 10% on Tuesday, declined another 1.7% today. The stock has slumped over the past week amid concerns about a slowdown in the AI chipmaker's blockbuster growth, while reports late Tuesday that the company received subpoenas from the Justice Department as part of an antitrust investigation also weighed on sentiment.

Other mega-cap technology stocks were mostly lower Wednesday, with Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOGL) losing ground, while Meta Platforms (META) inched higher.

Among other notable movers, Zscaler (ZS) fell 19% after the provider of cloud-based cybersecurity services issued an earnings outlook that came in well below Wall Street expectations. Discount retailer Dollar Tree (DLTR) fell 22%, leading S&P decliners, after reporting weak earnings and lowering its outlook, citing a "challenging" economic environment.

On the economic data front Wednesday, a report on job openings came in lighter than expected, while trade and factory order numbers were in line with economists' estimates. On Tuesday, two indicators of manufacturing activityshowed continued sluggish activity in the sector, which has been weighed down by high interest rates.

The most highly anticipated event of the week comes Friday, with the release of the August jobs report, which investors will be watching closely after a higher-than-expected July unemployment reading sent markets reeling in early August.

Market participants are watching economic indicators closely to get a sense of how aggressive the Federal Reserve might be in cutting its benchmark interest rate.Fed Chair Jerome Powellhas signaled that rate cuts are coming, possibly as soon as the September meeting of the central bank's policy committee, but has said that incoming data will drive the decisions on the pace and depth of the easing.

The president of the Atlanta Fed, Raphael Bostic, said in an essay released Wednesday that the Fed can't wait until annual inflation has fallen to the central bank's 2% target before cutting interest rates. Bostic, a member of the Fed's rate-setting committee, said that "data and our grassroots feedback describe an economy and labor market losing momentum."

The yield on 10-year Treasurys, which is sensitive to expectations around interest rates, was down to around 3.76% Wednesday afternoon, from 3.84% yesterday, at its lowest level in a month.

Gold futures were slightly higher at around $2,520 per ounce, while bitcoin rose to around $58,000 after falling to a four-week low near $56,000 earlier Wednesday.
