WYOMING VALLEY

The Wyoming Valley Poetry Society accepting entries for annual Student Poetry Contest, deadline Friday, April 5. Open to students in first through 12th grades in Northeast Pennsylvania. Held in conjunction with the Fine Arts Fiesta in Wilkes-Barre. Poems may be rhymed or free verse, not to exceed 32 lines, and must be original, unpublished works created by the student. Entries may be submitted on 8×11 inch white paper and typed or neatly written. Judging categories: primary, grades 1-3; intermediate, grades 4-6: junior, grades 7-9; and young adult, grades 10-12. Winners will be notified to show up at the Fine Arts Fiesta on Public Square, Wilkes-Barre, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, for a group photo for the newspaper and social media. All winners will receive a certificate suitable for framing and are invited to read their poems on stage at the Fine Arts Fiesta, on Sunday, May 19 after the group picture. All entries should include the student’s name, grade, school, hometown, phone number and teacher’s name. A Door to Door Fund Drive, for the Laflin Fire Department, is underway. Fund drive letters were mailed to all Laflin residents and businesses. A Memorial Day service, set for Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m., is planned in Laflin. To honor the men and women who gave their lives in service protecting our nation’s freedom, the borough will have a wreath laying ceremony at Creekside Community Playground Park in lower Laflin. Names of all Laflin veterans and those killed in service will be read. If you would like to add a family member’s name, please contact the borough office. Hot dogs along with other refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
